                                  ROSEMARY BRUFORD

When one reaches years of discretion many people find an autobiography coming on. Mine would read more unlikely than most soap-operas! But a legacy of 50 years of music in schoolrooms, choirs and Historic Productions finds me with boxes and files of manuscripts kids stuff, works for mixed choirs, ladies choirs and groups, accompanied and unaccompanied, many written in response to the perennial question, Do you know anything suitable for…? or could you write me something for…? So everything has been tested and performed with enthusiasm and some notable success.

By the way, I have been writing under the name Rosemary Panchen for years and years but am currently known as Rosemary Bruford, which causes some confusion: I answer to either, or neither.

PAST THREE A CLOCK

OCRB02

SSA version

This simple version of the old tune 'London Waits' was written for effective part singing for children but has been much enjoyed by adults also. The bell-like accompaniment and the addition of 'cold, frosty' sung with feeling gives atmosphere to what can be a rather boring 'carol'. Choose as many verses as you like and feel free to sing them tutti or in simple two parts.

                                 DOUGLAS COOK

I was born in West Ham, London, studied piano at the James Ching Piano School in Manchester during the late 40s and after National Service in Egypt, music at Bretton Hall and composition with Anthony Milner. Largely self taught as a composer I soon found that the avant garde held no appeal and chose to develop a personal style based on melody, harmony, rhythmic interest and most importantly the musical heritage of past masters.   Most of my music seems to develop organically and often takes a long time for even the simplest piece to fall into its final shape. Simplicity is the goal and I try to offer the listener something to enjoy "because they like the noise it makes". Much influenced by the mainstream early 20th century English school including Vaughan-Williams, Holst, Walton, Tippett and Britten as well as Early Music, modern French and Russian composers.
